Synopsis

Amara, 24, coordinates her village's water cooperative project. Tomorrow she must present the plan to the assembly. But every time she sits down to write it, her phone buzzes, and a swarm of digital fireflies rushes into her mind.

One night, exhausted, she falls asleep on her notes and wakes up in her inner temple: a golden sanctuary whose walls are breached on every side. Nanan Kouadio, the Old Builder, is waiting for her. He shows her the three gates through which the plunder enters — the Shield, the Environment, Discernment — and entrusts her with three weapons: the Sacred First Hour, the Pure Action Block and the Evening Cut-Off.

When she wakes, Amara fights the battle in the real world. On the day of the assembly, her plan is clear, and the village says yes.

Based on chapter 3 of The Architecture of Ascension.

Discussion questions

  1. What do the digital fireflies represent in Amara's life? And in yours?
  2. How many times a day do you think you pick up your phone? Check it this week.
  3. Which project have you put off because you were always distracted?
  4. Which of Amara's three weapons seems easiest for you to try? Why?

Activity

The firefly wall (20 min). Each young person writes on sticky notes everything that interrupts them during a day (one distraction per note). Stick them on the wall and group them into three gates: the Shield (notifications), the Environment (places, noise, people), Discernment (what we choose to look at). In pairs, everyone picks one firefly to "switch off" this week and how to do it.

The challenge of the week

For 7 days, no notifications before you have written your priority of the day, and one 45-minute uninterrupted block every day.
